Student Occupational Therapist

Expert in Enabling Occupation
Occupational therapists (OTs) use evidence-based processes that focus on a client's occupations - including self-care, productivity, and leisure - as a medium for action and outcome. OTs use knowledge of occupation, occupational performance, and occupational engagement, and other appropriate processes and interventions of enablement in the evidence-based provision of client-centered service.
“Louise is truly an occupational therapist at heart” - Level 2 Preceptor

My Experience
“I believe Louise will be a great OT and will be able to make wonderful contributions to her clients and the profession!” - Level 1 Preceptor
Being an expert in enabling occupation is the central competency of an OT. Throughout my clinical and academic experiences, I’ve continuously demonstrated my knowledge of the profession and I’ve provided evidence-based and client-centred services with the clients I've worked with.
Queen’s University has strategically instilled all of the core determinants of occupation in their course programming, which has allowed me to acquire a phenomenal knowledge foundation. These determinants include: physical, psychoemotional, environmental, and cognitive neurology. Through interactive courses and working with others, I’ve truly grasped the core values and principles of OT, which will guide my practice in any setting I wish to work.
Working in diverse placement areas, such as school-based pediatrics, rehabilitation clinics, and with community organizations has expanded my clinical, procedural, and professional reasoning skills. I’ve had the opportunity to choose and perform particular assessments to determine clients’ occupational performance issues. Furthermore, through analyzing assessment results, relying on my own observations, and the expertise of my preceptors, I’ve demonstrated skilled and selective use of occupation and interventions to enable clients to achieve their goals.

Future Learnings
“She has exceeded expectation in her clinical reasoning skills” - Level 2 Preceptor
Because this competency is at the very core of the profile of practice for occupational therapists, it’s inevitable that I will always be growing, learning, and developing more skills to enhance this competency. I am fully aware that I am just at the beginning of my career and that I’ve only seen and been exposed to a portion of assessments, interventions, and practice settings.
