MY OT PhILOSOPHY

"What you do everyday matters" - Gretchen Rubin

Aim for Professional Work

My professional work with clients will be viewed through a developmental, holistic, and ecological perspective. These perspectives help shape and build the foundation of my philosophy of practice, as they allow myself, as a professional, to practice the essential competencies of occupational therapy.

Ultimately, the aim of my professional work is to build trusting therapeutic relationships with my clients and use an occupation-focused lens to enable achievement of client goals in a meaningful way.

Personally, I am passionate in working and exploring multiple areas of occupational therapy. As a result, I am not constraining myself to one specific area of practice. With that said, I've gained valuable experience working in school-based pediatrics, a rehabilitation clinic with a focus on neurology, and will soon begin my final placement in a inpatient hospital serving older adults with serious mental illness. My well-rounded experiences working within interprofessional teams has prepared me with the skills to adapt to new career opportunities!

As a future occupational therapist, I aim to collaborate with my clients to develop and achieve S.M.A.R.T goals that are meaningful to them, which will help shape a client-centered relationship.

I hope to work collaboratively with clients to enable them to:

  • Fulfill their roles as occupational beings

  • Increase their intrinsic dignity and worth through occupation

  • See potential for change and their diverse abilities for participating in occupations

Goals for Clients

Client-Therapist Relationship

Developing a client-centered relationship is critical, as I believe that clients are experts regarding their own occupations and they must be active partners in the occupational therapy process. I hope to instill trust, respect, and compassion with my clients to establish supportive therapeutic relationships.

My ultimate goal would be to work in a supportive, positive, and warm work climate where the focus of decision making and system level changes are made for the interests and betterment of the clients.

I will aim to do so by ensuring clarity, high standards, take personal responsibility, and provide flexibility. Additionally, I will uphold a continuous commitment to the profession of occupational therapy and with coworkers, staff, and clients.

Work Climate

“I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.”
― Brené Brown
