Student Occupational Therapist
Practice Manager

Occupational therapists (OTs) develop and support sustainable pratices, manage caseloads, allocate resources, and demonstrate accountability to the public and funders to contribute to effective client program and services that enable participating through occupation.

“Louise is accountable and has taken on her responsibilities, not only as an OT student but also as a team member” - Level 2 Preceptor
My Experience
“She was exceptional in following through on commitments and frequently exceeded expectations” - Level 1 Preceptor
As an expert in practice management, I believe my time management and organization skills have helped me tremendously when working in fast-pace practice environments. One of my strongest skills identified by both of my preceptors during clinical fieldwork has been my ability to effectively and appropriately prioritize professional duties, including when faced with multiple clients and competing needs.
Additionally, I feel as though I’ve always known how to establish a good balance between work, outside activities, and personal priorities. The concept of “work-life-balance” is very important to me and I know that I perform more efficiently and effectively when I prioritize my time and activities accordingly. This gives me a sense of control, structure, and balance.
A more tangible example of when I used my practice manager skills was during my first placement. I would normally arrive to work a few minutes earlier than my preceptor. Instead of not doing anything during this time, I took advantage of the spare time to organize clients charts. By the end of placement, all of the charts for his 80+ caseload were properly labelled and prioritized, which made charting and paperwork at the office much more effective and enjoyable for all clinicians who shared those specific clients.
Future Learnings
An area within this competency that I have not yet had the chance to practice is to supervise support personnel in occupational therapy. Inevitably, I am still at the beginning stages of my occupational therapy career, but I hope as I gain more experience, opportunities to enable the effectiveness of support personnel either through mentoring, coaching, and training, will present themselves and I will be more willing and prepared to participate!
